Stress and Back Pain - April 8, 2010

Dear Friends of Roscoe Chiropractic

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the nice weather we had! With the Easter Holiday over the next thing on many minds is April 15th -- Hopefully many of you are not worried about this sometimes dreaded day. But just in case you are, say, a little "stressed",  this weeks email will address the topic of Stress and Back Pain.

The question arises which comes first: Stress or Back Pain? Well it can obviously go either way, pain will create stress and stress, it turns out, does cause pain as well. There are a wealth of studies that show the cyclical nature of these two beasts.

One of the bigger factors in the cause of stress and back pain is work. Studies from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that burned-out and mentally exhausted employees have the highest rate of back pain and the same employees also reported elevated levels of psychological stress, anxiety and depression.

How do we break this cycle? It's important to address both the issues simultaneously. If you only treat the pain, the psychological factors will simply re-exacerbate the pain and start the cycle over. So it's necessary to treat both stress and pain together. Chiropractic focuses on the vertebral subluxations which cause interference in the brain's ability to communicate effectively with the body. Correcting these subluxations helps not only with pain but also with mental well-being.

There are other strategies that help to alleviate stress, if you are interested in learning more about this pertinent topic please join Dr. Chris and myself at the Roscoe Public Library on Tuesday April 13th for a Stress Management Seminar. It begins at 6:30 and the space is limited, so please call the office to RSVP (815.623.8000). Bring your friends and family and receive a free adjustment! Any new patients will qualify for a free first exam and x-rays.

Stay healthy and stress free.

Take care this week!

Karla
