Did Somone Say Pollen? - April 15, 2010

Dear Friends of Roscoe Chiropractic!

It seems spring has sprung. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine! I know I am. Just a quick update before I share on the topic. Dr. Chris and I decided to postpone our Stress Management Seminar. So if you were interested in coming but had a conflict with the date or time, please check your calendar to see if you can make it on the new date. It will be Thursday April 29th at 6pm. The location will be right here at the office on Main St. in Roscoe. Again, please RSVP as space is limited!

As I sit here, inside, on this beautiful day, I can't help but look out the window and imagine what I would be doing were I out there. But then I see a woman walking by, she pauses, and ACHOO! Oh...allergies. If anything can take the wind out of your sails on a gorgeous spring day, allergies would be it.

The technical term for allergies is Allergic Rhinitis. This just means you're having an allergic reaction to airborne particles and it primarily affects the nose and eyes. Allergies seem simple enough unless you're a constant sufferer, and then studies show that allergies can affect quality of life, interfere with work and school and even depress mood and self perception.

There are two types of Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal (Hayfever) and Perennial (year-round). Hayfever is triggered by outdoor allergens and Perennial Allergies are usually upset by indoor allergens.  The allergic reaction is caused when the immune system overresponds to harmless substances - like pollen, mold, and pet dander - and then launches an assault to rid the body of  the substance.

I'm going to share some natural ways to help relieve Allergic Rhinitis:
1. Keep your Immune System in Top Form with Chiropractic
Preliminary research indicates that chiropractic strengthens immunity by influencing the nervous system. The spine houses the nervous system and if there in interference in the nervous system from the spine it can impair your immune system. Since allergies are tied to a dysfunction in the immune system, chiropractic is a good place to start to prevent these dysfunctions.
2. Allergy Prevention
Reducing your exposure to allergens is the most obvious solution to preventing symptoms. For Hayfever sufferers, pay attention to the pollen counts and try to stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms on days those counts are high. For Perennial Allergy sufferers use dust-mite covers for pillows and mattresses and invest in an air purifier.
3. Exercise
Regular exercise boosts the immune system response and helps to ward off allergies.
4. Stress Reduction
Stress and fatigue can exacerbate allergies. It is key for allergy sufferers to keep their emotional stress in check. Things like meditation, prayer, yoga and getting adequate sleep can help.
5. Dietary Supplements
    A. Antronex - This supplement contains Yakriton which helps keep histamines at acceptable levels. It also supports your immune system. This is a good supplement for all types of allergies.
    B. Allerplex - This is a supplement to help protect you during those seasonal changes that can aggravate allergies. It contains a variety of whole-food ingredients to promote healthy prevention of seasonal hayfever.
    C. Omega-3 Fatty Acids - These oils have been associated with decreased risk of hay fever. Good sources are Fish Oil Capsules, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Check with Dr. Chris if you are interested in any of these supplements and he can recommend which would be the best for you.

Get out and enjoy the weather today! Stay healthy, happy and sneeze free.

Take care,

Karla
